ChatGPT Ads is not years old: it is months old. A manual written in June is already out of date in September, and that changes how you have to work: everything you read, this lesson included, carries a date. Here is where the platform comes from, what each milestone meant for a small company, and what has just appeared.
Where it comes from
| Date | Milestone | What it meant for a small business |
|---|---|---|
| 9 Feb 2026 | US pilot, through agencies, with commitments of $200,000-250,000 and a flat $60 CPM (third-party data: Digital Applied, Jun 2026) | Nothing: you did not exist at that table |
| 5 May 2026 | Ads Manager self-service, with no minimum spend (Digital Applied, Jun 2026) | For the first time you could start at $25 a day |
| 31 Aug 2026 | Self-service across Europe, Spain included (OpenAI). The same day OpenAI says it reached $1bn annualised in under 200 days (statement picked up by the trade press) | You can advertise in your language and be billed in euros |
| 2-3 Sep 2026 | The availability list goes from 9 to 52 countries (third parties, reading OpenAI's help centre) | The channel stops being an English-speaking experiment |
| 16 Sep 2026 | Sponsored Agents, integrations and AI tools (see below) | The platform starts to look like an ecosystem |
Two readings of that table. First: the price of entry fell from $200,000 to zero in three months. Second, less comfortable: a platform that opens up this fast is a platform still learning, and you learn alongside it.
⚠️ Trap: "$1bn annualised" is not revenue booked. It is the latest snapshot of income multiplied out over a year. It is a traction number, not a result for the advertiser.
What landed on 16 September 2026
Sponsored Agents: the ad that answers back
After seeing the ad, the user can open a separate conversation with a brand's agent, clearly labelled, ask whatever they want and move to the website when ready. OpenAI stresses that this conversation is distinct from ChatGPT's own answers and separate from the original chat.
- Status: a pilot, and US-only, with selected advertisers. Among them Wayfair, which said it is "testing at small scale with guardrails on accuracy, transparency and handoffs to service" (Shopifreaks, 17/09/2026).
- What does not change: the card still appears below the answer, and ads still do not influence what ChatGPT replies.
If the format reaches your market, what will make the difference is not your bid: it is whether your information survives an interrogation. What I would prepare today — and which is not wasted even if the format never arrives:
- Written answers to the 20 questions people ask you most before buying, on your site, as readable plain text.
- Prices, lead times, coverage, warranty and returns published, not "ask us".
- A clear handoff to a human: which form, phone or chat the agent points to when the conversation gets serious.
Shopify and HubSpot: where you manage changes, not how it works
- HubSpot (from 16/09/2026): if you keep your customers there, you can connect a ChatGPT Ads account and create ads, track performance and follow up leads without leaving HubSpot.
- Shopify: a free app in its app store, first in the US and from 23/09/2026 in the other markets where ChatGPT Ads runs. It syncs the catalogue and builds campaigns from the store's dashboard (see "Advertising a catalogue: product feeds in ChatGPT Ads").
What matters for you: these are doors, not new engines. The auction, the context hints, the policies and the platform's limits are exactly the same. If your shop runs on Shopify, the app saves you the boring catalogue work; it does not save you from thinking.
AI tools for the advertiser
In the same announcement: copy and image suggestions drawn from your own page, campaign management by writing in plain language, and an option that rewrites the headline to fit the conversation and translates it into the reader's language.
⚠️ Trap: that rewriting is optional and worth treating as an experiment. Turn it on and your headline is no longer exactly yours: any comparison between ads gets blurry, and control over what the card promises — the very thing policies review — is now shared with a machine.
Official, press, or yours
With a platform that moves every week, source hygiene beats any trick:
| Type | Example from this lesson | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Official | The agent's conversation is distinct from ChatGPT's answers | It is the rule; it can change, but it governs |
| Trade press | Pilot dates, the $200,000 minimums, 52 countries, 23/09 for Shopify outside the US | Useful for orientation; check it against two outlets |
| Yours | What happened in your own account, with a date | The only thing worth deciding on |
What to take away
- The channel went from $200,000 to get in, to self-service with no minimum, in three months; in Spain you can advertise since 31/08/2026.
- Sponsored Agents is a US pilot (Wayfair among the testers): prepare by writing real answers, not by bidding.
- Shopify and HubSpot change where you manage things; the platform's mechanics are unchanged.
- Automatic headline rewriting is optional: switch it on as an experiment and measure it, not by default.
- Always separate official / press / yours, and date everything you read.
This lesson is reviewed every month: if a new milestone contradicts it, it changes here before anywhere else.
