In short: the landing page decides whether the click you paid for turns into a customer. What rules is consistency: the ad is a promise and the page has to keep it within the first five seconds. More speed on mobile, one single clear action, and never send all the traffic to the home page.

You have paid for the click. The person lands on your website. What happens in the next five seconds decides whether that money turns into a customer or into a bounced visit. The landing page is the half of the ad that lives outside Google Ads, it is a third of the Quality Score and, in most accounts, the lever with the most room and the least attention.

What is a landing page and what isn't one?

The landing page is your ad's final URL: where the click arrives. It is not your home page. The home page talks about everything to everyone; the click came from a specific search and expects a specific answer. Rule: one intent, one page. The implants campaign sends people to the implants page; the «price» ad group sends them to the pricing or finance section.

Why must the ad match the page?

The first thing the person does on arriving is check, without thinking about it, that they are where they expected to be. Three signals in the first screenful:

  1. The same words: if the ad said «pull-out kitchen tap», the page headline must say it.
  2. The same offer: if the ad promised «-20%» or «free delivery», it has to be visible without scrolling.
  3. The expected action: if the search was transactional, the buy/get-a-quote/call button is at the top and it is obvious.

Breaking any of the three sends bounce rate through the roof. And Google sees it: a page people bounce back from within seconds lowers your «landing page experience» and, with it, the Quality Score of that keyword.

How much do speed and mobile matter?

How many actions should a landing page have?

A landing page that offers six things converts worse than one that offers one. Decide what the action is (buy, request a quote, call, book) and push everything else into the background. The form: minimum fields (every extra field costs conversions); ask for their ID number and shoe size later, once they are a customer.

Checklist before sending traffic

Campaign page or website page?

For important campaigns, many advertisers build dedicated pages (landing pages) outside the main menu: no distractions, the ad's message and a single action. You don't need one for everything —a good product or service page works— but for lead generation and promotions they usually double the conversion rate compared with the «normal» page.

💡 Ninja trick: Google scores your page, but it does not tell you what is wrong with it. The Suite's QS Analyzer cross-checks the «landing page experience» component of every keyword against the URL it sends people to, and flags the pages dragging down several keywords at once: a single fixed page can lift the Quality Score of a whole ad group. And its landing page analysis (with AI) runs the checklist above for you.
