In short: Merchant Center is the Shopping link that fails most and gets looked at least: a disapproved product doesn't show, and a suspended account switches off Shopping and PMax at once, almost always at the weekend. The defence is a weekly diagnostic, automatic item updates switched on, and reading the Merchant inbox — suspension is about trust in the store, not about one product.

Merchant Center is the link in Shopping that fails most often and gets looked at least. A disapproved product does not show; a catalogue with too many disapprovals loses visibility across the board; a suspended account switches off Shopping and PMax at once, often over a weekend. This lesson is the maintenance.

Where do you see Merchant Center health?

Merchant Center → Products → Diagnostics (or "Needs attention" in the Next version): active products, products with issues (warning), disapproved ones, and account-level problems. Each problem comes with its reason, the number of products affected and a link to the fix. It is the screen you have to open every week.

What are the most frequent disapprovals and how do you fix them?

Reason What happens Fix
Price mismatch The feed's price ≠ the page's price on load (sales, VAT, per-variant pricing) Align feed and website; enable automatic item updates; send sale_price
Availability mismatch The feed says "in stock" and the website says "out of stock" More frequent feed; automatic item updates
Missing / invalid GTIN Barcode absent or badly formed Add the real GTIN; if the product has none, identifier_exists = no (only if it is true)
Image with text / watermark / placeholder Promotional or generic image Clean product photo; additional images for lifestyle shots
Wrong category or attributes Unsuitable google_product_category, missing gender/age group on clothing Fix the attributes required by the vertical
Shopping policy Restricted product, disallowed claims, sensitive content Review the policy; sometimes the product simply cannot be advertised
Landing page unreachable Robots, 404, redirect, slow load for the crawler Check Googlebot and Merchant access; speed

What are automatic item updates?

Google crawls your pages and, if it detects a price or availability different from the feed, corrects the data for you instead of disapproving the product (it uses the page's schema.org structured data). It is the first line of defence against the most common disapproval; enable it in Settings and check that your website has correct product structured data (module 6).

Why does a Merchant Center account get suspended?

The most serious ones are not per product, they are per shop: Google assesses the site's trustworthiness. Common reasons for suspension or "limited visibility":

Suspension arrives by email with a deadline; ignoring it (or not reading that inbox) is the most common way to lose Shopping. Having Merchant Center notifications land in an inbox that is read daily is compulsory.

What maintenance routine should you follow?

Weekly (5 min): Diagnostics — new disapprovals, warnings affecting many products, account problems; hero products still active.

Monthly (20 min): feed quality (warnings that limit visibility: short titles, no GTIN, images that could be better), review of the website's policies (shipping, returns, contact), check of structured data on a sample of pages.

When disapprovals spike: it almost always coincides with a change on the website (sales, migration, new template) — your ecommerce's change log explains what Merchant is flagging.

What nobody tells you about Merchant Center

💡 Ninja trick: on every run, the Shopping Ninja watches for products that stop getting traffic from one day to the next —the typical fingerprint of a disapproval— and for hero products that vanish from the report, and flags them before Merchant's diagnostics surface it in your weekly routine. The symptom in Google Ads (a product's clicks dropping to zero) usually arrives before the notice.
