The Google tag: how tracking is installed (and how to check it works)

In short: measuring needs two pieces: the Google tag, which goes on every page, and the conversion event, which fires where the action happens. The detail that decides data quality is where it fires: a real thank-you page measures well; a click on a button measures intentions, not results. And nothing is installed until it has been verified.

Now that you have decided what to count, you have to make sure Google finds out. This lesson is technical but code-free: what you need to know in order to install tracking (or to brief whoever installs it properly) and, above all, to check that it works. Tracking that is installed but never verified is the most common cause of accounts that «don't convert».

What do you need to install to measure conversions?

  1. The Google tag (formerly «gtag»): a snippet of code that goes on every page of the site. It is the foundation: it identifies the person who arrived from the ad and lets Google link the click with whatever they do afterwards. A single tag serves both Google Ads and Google Analytics.
  2. The conversion event: the signal that fires when the valuable action happens (the «thank you» page, the form submission, the call button). It carries the identifier of the conversion action you created in Google Ads.

How do you install the Google tag?

Method How Who it's for
Direct Paste the tag into the site's code (or use your CMS plugin: WordPress, Shopify, Wix...) Simple sites, with no developer
Google Tag Manager A container on the site; tags and events are managed from GTM without touching code The professional option: changes without a developer, everything in one place
Import from GA4 Google Analytics 4 events (purchase, generate_lead...) are imported as conversions Anyone already measuring properly in GA4; avoids duplication

With Tag Manager, the typical flow: Google tag in the container → «form submission» or «thank you page» trigger → Google Ads conversion tag with its ID and label. A developer does it in an hour, or you can do it yourself with a tutorial and some patience.

Where should the conversion fire?

What are enhanced conversions?

With the right consent, the tag can send Google customer data you already have (email, phone number, hashed) to recover conversions that cookies can no longer see (browsers that block them, cross-device journeys). You switch them on in the conversion action and configure them in the tag/GTM. In 2026 they are standard: turn them on — without them, tracking falls short and Smart Bidding learns from less data.

How do you verify that measurement works?

  1. Tag Assistant (tagassistant.google.com): type your URL, navigate through to the conversion and check that the Google tag loads on every page and that the conversion event fires once when you convert.
  2. In Google Ads → Goals → Conversions: the action must move from «Unverified» to «Recording conversions» within 24-48 h.
  3. Make a test conversion (a real form submission) and wait to see it in the report the following day. If it doesn't appear, tracking is not working even if Tag Assistant says it is.
  4. Check the action's diagnostics (Diagnostics tab): it warns about a missing tag, duplicates, a drop in volume.

What are the most common installation failures?

💡 Ninja trick: tracking breaks silently: a redesign, an updated plugin, a new form, and conversions drop to zero without anyone touching Google Ads. Smart Bidding, with no data, goes off the rails within days. That is why the Ninja Scripts Agent watches the conversion flow of every account and warns you when an action stops recording — before a whole month of bidding has been optimised towards nothing.
